Keynote Frank Dignum

Bio: I got my PhD at the VU in Amsterdam in 1989. After getting my PhD I went to Africa to set up a CS department at the university of Eswatini in 1990. From 1993 I have worked in Lisbon, Eindhoven and Utrecht and since 2019 I am Wallenberg chair in socially aware AI at Umeå University in Sweden. In 2022 I became the director of TAIGA (the centre for Transdisciplinary AI for the Good of All). Besides these affiliations I am an honorary professor of the University of Melbourne. I am well known for my work on norms and the theory of socially intelligent agents is employed in social simulations to support policy making in many different areas ranging from restrictions during the COVID pandemic to developing sustainable neighbourhoods, climate change adaptation and refugee management. At this moment we are developing social simulations for the WHO to get a better grip on the Ebola crisis in the DR of Congo. At the same time the techniques developed are used to develop human centered AI applications for health care. Since a few years I am involved in DL Indaba to support AI research in Africa and we advise some countries in Africa about their national AI strategies through UNESCO. I have organized the ECAI, AAMAS, PAAMS and HHAI conferences, organized many international workshops and edited and written more than 20 books and more than 400 papers.
